Housekeeping #FAILS

Have you ever spent a day on autopilot?  Have you ever had the kind of day where you pull into your driveway after a long day at work but you don’t even remember the drive home?  Have you ever had a day where you just can’t seem to get your ish together?

Yeah, I have those days too.  In fact, last weekend was one of those days.

The first awesome thing I did on autopilot was turn all of my hubby’s white shirts a lovely shade of lavender in the laundry.  Laundry #FAIL.

Yay, me!

The second thing I did was turn over an entire melted candle onto our carpet in our basement.  Woohooo!  I was on a roll!  Candle #FAIL.

Unfortunately, nothing could be done to rescue the lavender shirts.  I tried soaking, bleaching, washing, bleaching, soaking, etc.  They just turned a bit of a lighter shade of purple.

On the bright side, I was able to clean up all the candle wax!  And I thought it would be helpful to share how I did it, in case you ever have an autopilot day of your own.

HOW TO REMOVE CANDLE WAX FROM CARPET:

1.  Try to scrape up as much candle wax as possible from the carpet.  I used an old butter knife for this:

2.  Next, gather your supplies.  You will need some newspaper and an iron.  (By the way, this picture really doesn’t do the wax situation justice – it was splattered across the entire carpet!  24 ounces or so of melted wax, haha)

3.  With your iron on medium heat, start ironing over the waxy areas on top of a piece of newspaper.  The wax will start melting and will be absorbed into the newspaper:

4.  Keep ironing over the wax, changing out the newspaper for fresh sheets along the way.  Eventually, the wax will be gone…voila!

What are your home remedies for other housekeeping fails?  Please share – I’m sure I’ll need to reference your tips in the future 🙂

5K and Post-Race Pizza Party

Happy weekend!  It’s been a great weekend around here.  On Saturday morning, we got up early and headed into Philly to run a 5K with friends.

My hubby sporting his “I got up too early” expression on the way to the race:

The race started at Eastern State Penitentiary, which is seriously one of the creepiest places I’ve ever seen (but so cool!).  This time of year they turn it into a huge haunted house…crazy!  Anyway, here we are in front of the penitentiary walls:

I am such a super slow runner, so I was pretty happy that I finished the race in under 30 minutes (I think…the race times haven’t been posted yet).  Here’s our crew celebrating with post-race hot coffees:

We invited everyone over later that night for a pizza party at our house…so fun!  Just like all our get-togethers, I spent some time setting up before our friends arrived.

All the fixins on a lazy Susan

Apps were set up on our bar

Halloween plates and napkins

Lots of refreshments at the ready

The best part, the toppings!

That isn’t the best pic, as everything’s still covered in plastic wrap, but here are the toppings we had ready, in case you ever want to throw a make-your-own pizza party at home:

  • LOTS of shredded mozzarella
  • Balls of buffalo mozzarella
  • Crumbled bleu cheese
  • Chicken pesto sausage, sliced
  • Sliced red onion
  • Sliced mushrooms
  • Sliced red bell peppers
  • Pesto
  • Pizza sauce
  • Fresh basil
  • Chicken
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Prosciutto
  • Kalamata olives
  • Pepperoni

We bought the dough at Trader Joe’s, and then ended up making another run to our local pizza restaurant to buy some more dough from them (which was much better than Trader Joe’s, IMO!).

Here are the combinations we came up with:

  • Tomato, mozzarella and basil
  • Sausage, mushroom, black olives, and cheese
  • Buffalo chicken with crumbled bleu cheese
  • Clam and mozzarella
  • Spicy salami, cheese, and mushrooms

Yum, frickin’ yummm!  Pizza artistry in action:

Hubby tossing the dough

Yumm!

A variety of pies

Thumbs up from all of us!

Such a great night with friends!

Do you ever make pizzas at home?  What are your favorite pizza toppings?  Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

WIAW, SBUX Edition + WIWW

Hello, friends!

It’s been a little while since I had a “What I Ate Wednesday” post up in here.  I remembered to keep track of my eats yesterday…let me know if you sense a theme here 😉

1. Breakfast was my current favorite protein shake, made with 1/2 cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk, 3/4 scoop of vanilla whey protein powder, 2 tablespoons of pumpkin, 1 tablespoon of flax seed, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and ice:

2. Late in the morning, I enjoyed a cup of Starbucks from our office Keurig, a brown rice cake, and about a tablespoon of almond butter:

3. I stepped out at lunchtime and grabbed a grande non-fat Pumpkin Spice Latte from Stabucks:

4. Later, I enjoyed a Twizzler and…you guessed it…another Starbucks beverage! This time it was a Refresher (I’m addicted to these!)

5. When I got snacky late in the afternoon, I grabbed some baby carrots and a little bit of spinach dip to hold me over until dinner:

6. And finally, my husband and I did not feel like cooking at all for dinner, so we nuked some of these evol burritos for dinner (which are actually surprisingly delicious)

So, yeah…my eats were truly unremarkable and surprisingly full of Starbucks products. I could have definitely made some improvements, but hey, I’m keeping it real around here!

Can I make up for my crappy eats with a “What I Wore Wednesday” (WIWW) instead? Here’s a recap of my outfit of the day:

Outfit of the Day, October 9th

Playing on Polyvore is so much fun!  I get to pretend I wore anything half as expensive as what you see here 😉  In reality, my shirt came from Target, as did my skinny jeans, my shoes were on sale at Macy’s, my lipgloss was a freebie from Ulta, and my scarf was a super clearance item from Boscov’s.

What’s on your menu today?  Hopefully something much healthier than what you see here!  Have a fabulous day 🙂
