Status Check on Goals: November

(Also known as the longest blog post everrr)
OK, I realize it’s been forever since I’ve checked in on my goals – well, at least officially checked in on the blogosphere.

However…I really have been diligently working towards achieving each of the goals that I listed back in January on this blog!  Aaaand, I’ve even put some thought into my goals for 2013 😉

It’s hard to believe there are less than 2 months in 2012.  Crazy, right?  Since we’re getting so close to the end of the year, I thought it would be good to do a little recap of where I am to date:

{ Health }

Goal:  Partipate in a fitness competition
I really wish I had given myself more than one fitness goal to achieve in 2012.  Particularly because I really felt lost after I completed my fitness competition back in April.  I’m still a little lost, to be completely honest!  But, I’ve been getting my booty to the gym and have basically just been in maintenance mode for the last several months.
Health Goal:  COMPLETE, baby

{ Habitat }

Goal:  Organize my house
The goal of organizing my house has probably been the most time-consuming out of all the goals I listed.  Every weekend, I’ve spent a little time organizing areas of my home, and in all honesty, it’s about 90% complete!  Yaaaay!

There are a few embarrassing spaces left to be organized.  Namely, our garage and our basement.  They are not small projects to complete so I’ve been putting them off until the end, which of course has delayed their completion.  Now that we are getting into the colder months (I’m looking at snow falling outside my window as I type this!), the garage project may be delayed until next spring.  However, I hope to finish the basement before the end of 2012.

Side note: Would anyone be interested in seeing an “organized house tour” series for the spaces I haven’t shown yet on the blog?  Maybe I’m a voyeur, but I love seeing how other people organize their homes.  LMK!
Habitat Goal:  In Progress, Nearly Completed

{ Happiness }

Goal #1:  Train Pickles (my doggie)
Pickles is definitely a work in progress, but her behavior has improved tremendously in recent months.  I have been taking her on loooooong walks and listening to Cesar Milan’s audio books on my iPod while we walk.  I really believe in his approach of “exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order.”  I think this has really helped improve our little canine maniac’s disposition.  I also discovered that our little dog is the BEST running partner!  She just runs and runs and runs and never tires out.  I plan to continue running with her!
Happiness Goal #1:  Complete!

Goal #2:  Go on vacation with my husband
We had such a nice vacation to Riviera Maya earlier this year.  It was exactly what I needed at the time, as I was transitioning away from my former job and really needed some mental relaxation.  I’d love to travel more in 2013, even if it’s a short weekend getaway.
Happiness Goal #2:  Complete!

Goal #3:  Make 5 new friends
This may sound like a silly goal to most people.  I’ve struggled with meeting new friends since moving to PA years ago…let’s face it, the older you get, the harder it is to meet new people, particularly when you don’t have kids (that seems to be how most people I know expand their social circle).  That being said, I feel blessed to have met so many great people this year and to have strengthened relationships with people I know.  And I consider anyone reading this post a friend, so you can add yourself to the list 😉
Happiness Goal #3:  Complete

Goal #4:  Make more money
This is such a point of frustration for me.  I used to make pretty decent money, then I made a career change a couple of years ago and have been playing catch-up ever since.  I’m not sure if I’ll ever get back to the salary level where I used to be, which is just so annoying.  Money isn’t everything, but I work hard and dammit, I want more money!  I will say, I am making more money now than I was at the beginning of 2012, so for now I’ll consider this one…
Happiness Goal #4:  Complete

{ Hobbies }

Goal: #1  Take better care of my skin
I really think this one deserves its own blog post.  In recent months, I have been suffering from annoying skin issues, and I’m not sure if they are product, environment, or hormone related.  Who knows.  I did just start a new skin care regime which I will try to post about later this week, if anyone’s interested.  I’ve also decided to go have my skin checked for any possible skin cancer issues.  Overall, I’ve taken much better care of my skin this year but this could definitely be improved.
Hobbies Goal #1:  Work in progress

Goal #2:  Pursue my hobbies
I didn’t clearly define what my hobbies are when I set this goal, which I guess is why I didn’t make too much progress with this one.  I did start taking ballet, which has been an adventure 🙂  I’ll be re-evaluating this goal for 2013.
Hobbies Goal #2:  Work in progress

Goal #3:  Become more involved in social media
It’s pretty pathetic that I work in marketing and create clients’ social media campaigns, but I can’t even bother to keep up with my own Twitter account, right?  I have definitely become more involved in social media this year, but there is room for improvement in 2013.  (By the way, connect with me!  The buttons for my social media pages are right over there to your right –>)
Hobbies Goal #3:  Complete

…and finally, the “Push Goal,” to start my own business.
This is still hands down absolutely something I want to do.  The stars just need to align for things to work out for me.  I haven’t forgotten about my push goal, and I still feel like it will push me towards achieving all of my goals and more!
Push Goal:  INCOMPLETE (for now)

I’d love to hear about goals you have achieved in 2012 so far, and if you’re already thinking about 2013 the way I am.  I’m a big believer in making your goals public – so ‘fess up!!  😉

OK, OK, I Get It ;)

Hmm, where to begin…..

Well, I think the best place to begin is with a big “thank you!”  Thank you to all of you ladies that took the time to reach out to me and say “where the *&!% are you??”

I didn’t really mean to pull a disappearing act, but wow, I guess I did.  I probably would have stayed in hiding indefinitely if it wasn’t for a few of you nudging me back, so thank you 🙂

That being said…ummm….I’m back!!  And I’d like to give a little update on my goals and life in general.  If you’re interested, read on…if not, that’s cool too 🙂

On the fitness front: I don’t even know where to begin with this.  I could probably dedicate an entire post to what the heck happened to my brain and body post-competition, but I’ll give you the brief overview for now.

In a nutshell, I kind of forgot how to be “normal” after my competition.  I was still signed up for coaching services through Cathy Savage Fitness, but I felt like a lost soul with no real “purpose” in my training after the competition.  For many weeks, I was half-heartedly following the Savage recommendations for training and nutrition, but I found myself swinging WAY out of control with my food.  It was all or nothing:  I’d try to eat “perfectly” for a few days and then I’d have an entire day of eating CRAP food which I wouldn’t have touched with a 10-foot pole in the past.  To be honest, I guess I started having some disordered thinking and behavior with food.  I hear this is common with women who participate in fitness competitions, so I’m sure I’m not alone.  And rather than airing out my dirty laundry on this blog, I went into hiding.  Plain and simple.

The thing is, I know how to eat in a balanced and healthy way.  I know how to be active and fit in regular exercise.  The more I try to follow a regimented program, the more pressure I start to put on myself, and that’s not a good place for me.  In my regular, day-to-day life, I don’t need someone to tell me how to eat and exercise.  Yes, if I am training for a specific purpose, I need all the  help I can get.  But I’m not currently training for another competition; therefore, I discontinued my membership with Savage.  It is a fantastic program and I can’t say enough good things about it…it’s just not the program for me at this stage in my life.

I’ll be giving you more updates on my current diet and fitness in the near future, but that’s where I am right now!  🙂

On the rest-of-my-life front:  The hubby and I have recently had a really, really tough couple of weeks.

My father-in-law passed away.  Even as I type those words, I’m still in a bit of disbelief.

Trever’s dad, Big Rudy, was larger than life.  He was a vivacious, kind, fun guy who was always the life of the party.  Rudy took me under his wing just like I was his own daughter.  And he was my husband’s best friend.

We were both absolutely devastated to lose him.  I haven’t really had a chance to share my feelings about this with anyone before now.  It’s impossible to describe how heartbreaking it is to not only lose someone that I was very close to, but to watch the person that I love most in the whole world, my husband, deal with such a terrible, crushing loss.

We are still in the midst of processing this grief and all the emotions that come along with this experience.  I am just trying to be the best wife and support that I can be to my husband, but man, it’s been really rough.  So…that’s that.

And in other news:  I’ve been giving a lot of thought to the direction of this blog moving forward.  Even though I haven’t been posting a lot lately, I actually have been diligently pursuing my goals.  So, I’d like to continue to give updates on the things that I’ve set out to achieve in 2012 (sheesh, before you know it, it’s going to be 2013!).

But, I’d also like to blog about…life.  Ya know, the random stuff that pops into my head that I want to share with you and the rest of the universe 😉  It might be fitness-related, or food-related, or fashion-related, or something silly, or just daily ramblings.  I guess what I’m trying to say is – it’s not going to be so regimented.  I hope that’s OK with you…and I’d love for you to come along 🙂

And OK, I get it!  It’s not cool to pull a disappearing act.  It won’t happen again. 🙂

Another Organization Project: The Pantry!

Hey friends!  Thanks for your feedback on the last organization post – I really appreciate it!

I’ve been working on yet another little project:  our pantry.  The “before” pics are pretty scary…and the “progress” pics are a little less scary.  Let’s just say it’s a work in progress 😉

Here are the before pics…I’ve mentioned this before, but the insides of every closet in our house desperately need to be painted.  Our house is 25 years old, and the closets still have the original builder’s primer on them – ugh!  One of these days when we decide to repaint our interior, I’ll paint these closets.  Until then, apologies for the dinge 🙂  Apparently I also live in the darkest house in America, which makes taking decent pics of our tucked-away corner pantry pretty difficult!

The top 2 shelves of our pantry

The bottom 2 shelves and the floor of our pantry

Yikes!  Pretty scary, right?

I took a trip to Home Goods and Staples for a few supplies, and here’s what I came up with:

The top shelf: for snacks, onions and potatoes, and packets of food.

The second shelf: for canned goods and sauces, on tiered risers.

The third shelf: Dry goods in OXO containers. The labels are “chalkboard” so they can be changed as needed.

The fourth shelf: Protein powders and a lazy susan for all our cat and dog treats.

On the floor: other dry goods and our container of dog food.

So while I’m sorry these pics are so dingy and orange and generally yuck-o, I hope this post inspires you to organize something in your home this weekend! I’m off to tackle my next project 😉 Have a fabulous day!

Back on the organization train

Hey, hey!  Hope you had an absolutely fabulous weekend 🙂

Just a super quick post to share a video that I put together of an organizing project I was working on over the weekend.  My dresser drawers were a hot mess, but I’ve straightened them up a bit.  Here is a link to the spring-loaded drawer dividers that I purchased from Target if you’re interested (I couldn’t find this item on Target’s website, but I found it on Amazon and other sites).

I’ve decided to get back on track with organizing projects, as this is one of my big goals for 2012.  Do you like or hate these posts?  Let me know!!  🙂
